Acetyl L-carnitine (often abbreviated as ALCAR) is a naturally occurring compound that’s a form of L-carnitine, an amino acid derivative involved in energy metabolism. Acetyl L-carnitine is the acetylated form of L-carnitine, which means it can more easily cross the blood-brain barrier.
It plays a key role in the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells, where they can be burned for energy.
Acetyl-L-carnitine is sometimes used for Alzheimer disease, improving memory and thinking skills, treating symptoms of depression, and reducing nerve pain in people with diabetes. It is used for many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support many of these uses.
